    Spruance DD's and variants

    Peanut butter beta time. Peanut butter beta time... Sprucans and variants.
    Been on the back burner for a while. So, texture mapped, hard deck, fx and nofx versions.
    I see a few things to fix, some mapping needs going over again, some more clean up, most of which
    is all ready done in the render engine models, just needing compiling.

    Attachment 4290

    The Spru's: Spruance, Oldendorf, Stump, Moosbrugger and Fletcher
    The Kidds: Kidd, Callaghan,Scott and Chandler.
    The Spru DDH : Hayler. Yes DDH. Hayler and one more ship were ordered as DDH's- larger hangar and flight deck for 4 helio's- same idea as the Shiriane DDH's. No detail design done, and the orders were converted to standard DD's as the engineering costs had ballooned to 101 million by 1978- the dawn of the gold plate study phase that led to all that vaporware (DDX, CGX, CGNX, SCS, A-12, JSF, ect,ect)

    Let us know how it goes. Off now, Dogs and I are headed to the local for a pint before siesta time.

    Yes, but behind CG's or CGN's in the line up. I keep looking at Long Beach, but the California's or Virginia's need doing, but yah, we need a Knox. I thought you had one going, or was I remembering incorrectly?

    I've been working on the Long Beach off and on for some time. I was on it from '89-'92.

    I have always been interested on that class, since the Armada used a modified version (the Baleares class). In fact, I have the blueprints ready, but I haven´t found time to begin the design.

    N2056, hope that CGN-9 makes it to release. Dang that looks tasty!

    So. Do you think you can fly off this?

    Nice!!
    I always found the Long Beach an interesting ship being a one off.
    Did she roll badly with that phased array high up like that?
    keep up the great work with the model.
    Sketchy.

    It was annoying if it was riding the trough of the swell. Worst I saw was rounding the horn of Africa in '89. 55* roll to port at 3am. Made a big mess of things!

    55 deg roll! That would have plastered the bulkheads. And that was long after all the old electronics were stripped out. I seem to recall a figure of 400 tons or so of electronics alone when the BILLBOARD system was replaced. Way back in '70's I got banished aboard for a couple of weeks for an exercise-can't remember who I p!$$ed off in the squadron to draw that duty- got caught in a huge blow in the Bering Straight. The fish heads said the roll 'was only' 30-40 deg, but it felt like it was going over and right around again, though I found the pitching to be more disconcerting, simply because it seemed to be in slow motion, and went on and on, damn near to 100 deg motion from one end of the cycle to the other. They said they were great riding ships,too. I puked for 3 days straight! Good times!

    lazarus,
    Thank you for the Spruance DD's, I love your ships. I served aboard USS Comte De Grasse (DD-974), one of the seven Spru's equipped with Tomahawk ABL's (Armored Box Launchers). Any chance of having a version with the ABL's mounted?

    Anything for a steady customer!
    ABL and VLS versions. All of the bits are done. Its funny, but like any model building, you end up with a 'spares box' so most of the work is done

    lazarus;

    What H-3 is that in the first post with the VX-1 markings ? Virtavia ? Paint available ?
    I spent many an hour boring holes in the sky in "Eyesight 22".

    I didn't know VX-1 had a Seaking in their inventory. I have the Virtavia SH-3 and dollars to doughnuts, that is Virtavia repaint.

    Don't mean to hijack this thread . . . . . .
    '65 to '69 back when I was at VX-1 at Boca Chica we had four SH-3's. A models first then we got the "new" D's.
    Also had four S-2F, four P-3A, and one P-2V.
    Sooner or later gonna do the paints for all of them.

    Hijack the thread, Not at all. ASW's what its all about. And now We have the call sign to amend the config file. Good and catchy, too; EYESIGHT 22.
    The VX-1 skin is a FS9 alphasim skin, but adaptation to FSX is straight forward. On Hovercontrol:

    And an addendum. Greyeagle put me onto a glitch in the simconfig for USS Kidd. I fumduckered the texture assignments in the sim config. Do a cut and paste with this:

    [fltsim.0]
    title=USS_DDG-993_KIDD
    model=
    texture=1

    [fltsim.1]
    title=USS_DDG-994_Callaghan
    model=
    texture=2

    [fltsim.2]
    title=USS_DDG-995_Chandeler
    model=
    texture=3

    [fltsim.3]
    title=USS_DDG-996_Scott
    model=
    texture=4

    Don't know why I did not see or notice that. The accused pleads 'nux vomica' and begs the mercy of the court....

    Wups! Good catch. Noted for correction. I'd better check the textures and see if I got the hull numbers on the right ships!

    lazarus,
    Thank you for taking action on my request for a Tomahawk ABL-equipped Spruance, and also the VLS configuration.

    Like I said, anything for a steady customer. Those were in the queue from the start, anyways, along with the what if's. And on that note...

    almost ready for launch! I found a drawing of a CATOBAR version too, with a airgroup of Convair-201's in the artwork. Buwahahaha! This is fun!

    That's quite interesting......as some of us do have the Razbam Convair 201, it will make a complete "what if" picture!

    Landing a CTOL fighter on a Spruace... suppose thats one way to go. Would love to see the artwork, also a proud owner of the Razbam bird so if its on the slipway

    Outstanding Destroyers

    I was very excited to find this package. I still remember when Oldendorf was last in San Diego.

    I think some of my friends referred to her as "Old and Broke"...

    Almost ready for sea trials...
    Attachment 4776

    Most of the formal SCS designs were variations of the design that became the Principe de asturias, which is in hull form and machinery descended from the Spru's . I'd thought I'd saved the jpeg, and I can't find the thing now. Similar to the Ghiradella proposal, with the gun and ASROC removed in favor of a longer flightdeck forward, and my eyeball says it looks a bit longer and beamier, about 600x60. I'm thinking I'll just clear the foredeck and build forward, and move the lift aft re Tarawa/R-11 .
    Thes studies were really cool looking too...Attachment 4777
    Anyways. Into the paint barn and a quick spin in the sim, with luck, the beta may be available here in a couple of hours...
    Greyeagle is having a helluva time getting the ships to show up. I've just downloaded the beta zip to have a looksee. Any one else crapping out?

    Its allright for an alpha rollout. I see a few things need fixing, as always, but not too bad
    Presenting USS CVE-128 Ernest.E Evans class. Not sure how that fits into naming-numbering conventions, CVE128 is the next number in sequence after the last Commencement Bay CVE, and if you don't know the story of Ernest Evans at the Battle off Samar, look into that. Appropriate for a escort carrier class I think. The design was never more than a 'back of the envelope' study by Cmdr. Ghirdella,USN; first appearing in 1978 in Proceedings, the study sparked considerable interest in naval circles.

    Attachment 4780

    OK, I down loaded the Spruance test package, I noted no show stoppers. In this zip are replacement simconfig files that correct the typos and transpositions, just replace the originals and update your AICarriers2 config. I also put in a AICarriers2 conf.d file with all the spru, Kidds, Hayler and Evans, just drop into your AICarriers conf.d folder. Its straight from my install, so its all been flown in sim, and works fine on this end, hopefully that'll resolve any problems. Crosses fingers.
