CFS & Windows 7 & MS Sidewinder FFB2 Joystick

Hi

I have installed CFS on this new Windows 7 computer. The program loads without any problem, but the Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick doesn't work. The game seems to see it, the force feedback effects work, but there is no control. I've also installed CFS2 and CFS3. The joystick works with both of them, although it seems way too sensitive. At this point I'm not concern with CFS2 and CFS3 issues because the original Combat Flight Simulator is my favorite of the three.

I've been fiddling and muddling with this problem for a few days. I've searched the web and read all kinds of fixes, some of which are dubious, and some of which seem to work for some folks, and finally I found SOH. I had already learned that the problem seems to lie with CombatFS.CFG. I've replaced the cfg file with the one from my old Windows XP installation and I've downloaded replacements cfg files to no avail. I read the earlier threads in this forum, including the sticky one. I downloaded and inserted the replacement text for the cfg file from there, too. Still doesn't work.

I've tried compatibility mode and I'm signed in as an administrator.
The CombatFS.CFG file is installed in c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator

I know these fixes have worked for some folks, but so far not for me. I've done all I know to do and I'm up against the wall. This forum seems to be the font of knowledge regarding this problem, so I sure do hope somebody here can guide through the fix.

I had already downloaded the utility. I'm the exception to the rule. It made no difference.

Perhaps I've fouled things up with so much fiddling. I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling CFS to start with a clean slate.

I uninstalled and reinstalled CFS and then replaced the CombatFS.CFG file with the one in your utilities package. It was a no go.

Unless some one has any suggestions, it looks like the end of the line for CFS for me.

No need to dump your fav sim so easily on account of a stick. Just get a used - or new - Logitech Force 3D Pro stick and keep both connected. Set CFS1 to only use the Logitech stick. BTW, the Logitech will work in all three with its most recent software patch and drivers. Its a good piece of hardware and my one and only since my beloved MS Sidewinder FFB2 played out a few years ago...but i still miss the weight and feel of the MS Sidewinder sometimes.

as one can easily see
by looking at other threads here,
this problem has been haunting
W7/cfs users for quite some time.
i do not have a machine with W7,
so be aware that this is untested by me.

in conversation with Doug Attrell yesterday,
he made this suggestion;

"What I suggest is doing a fresh Custom Install of CFS
to a location outside the default Program Files (x86) directory.
Make the path as short as possible.
Something like C:\CFS1 would be ideal.
After running the new install try pasting the CombatFS.CFG
from the Win7 fix already mentioned
into the root directory folder, overwriting the existing file.

Doug has not run cfs for many years.
but was gracious enough to install it on his laptop,
using an old cfs install on a thumb drive.
after adding his joystick,
he was successful.

Doug is of the opinion that this issue
has something to do with W7 security blocking cfs
when it's installed on the default
c:\program files\ms games\cfs path.

i hope this helps.
please give it a try and let us know your results.

next, if you are interested, i will show you how
to lock you joystick in the combatfs.cfg
this technique will save your settings
if you accidentally click yes
when that pesky "Your Joystick has changed..."
pops up when you go into settings.

I uninstalled CFS (The uninstaller only uninstalls the uninstaller, so I just deleted the folder) and reinstalled it in C:\CFS1, then copied in the combatfs.cfg file from the utility. It worked!

It still wasn't quite right. The replacement cfg file seems to be set up for a Logitech joystick, so I replaced it with the cfg file from my old XP box. That worked better. The customize controls dialog box still doesn't show the joystick, and I still get the Your Joystick Controller Has Changed From "gibberish" to "gibberish" message.

It isn't 100%, though. There are still some odd quirks. Intermittently, I get odd force feedback. Sometimes the stick begins to oscillate. Mouse clicking off the flight screen will correct this. A couple of times it feels as if the guns are firing when they're not, and not when they are. Pressing G, to lower then gear and then quickly again to raise it, will correct this.

The brakes (B) and flaps (F) don't work. There probably are other issues that I haven't discovered yet, but at least I'm flying again.

i am right in the middle of a project,
but would like to see if we can do something
about the other problems you mentioned above.

Very happy to see that all this is being figured out, BUT for anyone that can afford it; adding Win7 pro eliminates all the problems by adding
XP to your machine as seamless. At least it worked on my trial attempt on a new laptop.

you could do what i do.
stick with what works...xp
i neither have the finances nor the need for W7.
i can't imagine what W8 will do to the old programs.

before coming accross this fix,
my suggestion would have been,
go out and find an old machine with xp on it.
they are cheap.
if you have the room for it.
then, buy a switch so that you can use
one keyboard, screen and mouse for both.
i bought one for four machines
for around $50 US.
a two machine switch is much cheaper.

I must agree with smilo, XP is the only way to go, plus the switch he talks about is simple and easy'
I know because I still run a Windows 98 comp tied into my others.

For any new comers, smilo is the go to guy for tech work, Ivan for planes, Hubba is the Guru of CFS

at present, i don't know how to repair
your force feedback problems.

the good news is, your keyboard commands are okay.
you just forgot what they are.
B is for TOGGLE_RADIO
F is for TOGGLE_DAMAGE_TEXT
these are plain key, not Shift+ or Ctrl+ commands

see below, highlighted in red, are the commands you want,
including a few extras. i have added the keys
next to the key command codes.

notice that i have also locked the joystick commands
by changing LOCKED=0 to 1

to make changes in your controller settings,
you will, first, need to change it back to 0,
make the changes in Customize Controls
and change back to 1 after the end of the session.

if, like me, you make controller changes.
the last thing you want to happen
is to accidentally click YES on that Controller Gibberish window.
you will loose all your settings back to default.

there are a bunch of unused flight control commands
that are not used in CFS...auto pilot comes to mind.

as a trivia side note;
did you know that you can have
up to 16 controllers installed?

I get a dope slap for that one. The B and F keyboard commands for brakes and flaps are from CFS 2.

The oscillation in the joystick begins when the gear comes up. Mouse clicking off the screen, which usually pauses the game, and then clicking back in the game window usually clears it. It doesn't do it all the time, about 4 out of 5 times or so. It also starts sometimes if I take a flak hit.

I have a similar issue with CFS 2, which loaded with joystick use in Win7 no prob. Pausing and unpausing the game fixes the issue in CFS2.

This afternoon, I was sitting in my car waiting to pick up my grandson from shool when a P-51 flew over. I had read in the paper this morning that the P51 and a B17 and B24 were at our local airfield for a couple of days. Half hour flight in the Mustang for $2200, full hour for $3200. Guess I'll have to stick with CFS.

I tried pressing the alt key twice in CFS2. It paused the play but didn't stop the inappropriate feedback. Hitting the P (pause) key does the trick in CFS2. I haven't tried it yet in CFS1, but I will and will let you know.

Firng rockets occsionally starts the machine gut stutter feedback in CFS, but unlike when it starts by firing the machine guns, pressing the G (gear) key twice has no effect. Mouse clicking off the playing screen does stop it.
