    Ransomware scam

Oh boy, another scam. This one looks like the FBI has you pegged as a thief and locks your files until you send $200 (the going rate I guess) to "unlock" them. The wifes computer got hit tonight so now I'm finding out how to fix it, I hope. As always keep files backed up.

Thought I'd investigate this removal plan...

Anybody know how to deal with this problem?

Yeah, showed up on my computer the other day. Booted back up in safe mode, used Malwarebytes to remove it. You will need to run that twice though. I did it once, rebooted and came up regular, then ran Malwarebytes again, and it found another trojan hidden. I've since run it sevral times over the last few days and all is well. Didn't take long....

Went right past MSE, AVG and AdawareLive. Turns out my kid was checking out a YouTube about The Hunger Games someone had posted and that was all she wrote. Now appearing live at the desktop in safemode... MBE, Spybot, Adaware, and FSecure scanner. At least it seems restore points were left alone so if all else fails might try that, just to try and copy out some files.

Stuff like that is why I don't like anyone to use my computer. Mrs Willy has her own and no reason to be on mine.

Got real lucky. The chap Britec made a slew of videos for several versions of ransomware, but none seemed to fit what I had close enough to try as fixes except one just using system restore. Since mine still allowed safe mode and I still had valid restore points I just used one of them and so far so good. I did download the cleaner tool but plan to keep it until needed later. Thanks for the links.
