Gotta say hats off to everyone who has posted screens shots. Quality is simply outstanding!

Especially liked the Isurava Memorial, Kokoda Track scenery post by MZee1960, a few pages back. Quite poignant.

A few IRIS'es basking in the sun ........

I love how their metallic paints sparkle in the sun, and the VC glass textures, well ... they're are as good as the real thing.

Thank-you, @Pips, for the kind words.

Great shots, Huub ! This must be Orbx AU Australia V2 ?

Here's a few 'Stang 'puddle jumpers' making pit stops at RAF Alconbury .....

..... and, of course, my favorite one with the 'high maintenance' polish ....

As beautiful as the Asobo Mustangs in MSFS are, IMHO there is something just 'not natural' about pics of parked P-51's with the pilots still (appearing locked) inside the cockpits.
Chalk one up for FSX, I guess !

    Hi Milan,

Great shot from the Mustangs. I have seen "Damn Yankee" several times. As the pilot/owner has become above a certain age he is not allowed to perform "commercial flights" anymore. I hope this does not end with selling this Mustang.

The shots with Keith Paine's Miles M3b Falcon were not take above ORBX Australia. The text "On my way to Melbourne" might have confused you. The shot was actually taken above ORBX Southern Germany. But this particular aircraft took part in the MacRobertson Centennial Air Race, also known as the London-Melbourne race. To be honest the aircraft never flew over Southern Germany as the first stage went from Mildenhall UK to Marseille (France) and the second stage went from Marseille over Italy to Greece. I have plans to redo the complete race in FSX, but already decided not to do this in the humble Miles.

Talking about the MacRobertson Centennial Air Race.......

Default FS2004 DH.88 Comet converted to native FSX by Craig "Full" Richardson and great textures by Jamie "Desert Rat" Tindall (Scenery LHS Bony). This aircraft ended 4th in the race in a time of 108 hr and 13 minutes.

    Cheers,
    Huub

Thanks, Huub. It's great scenery and definitely had me fooled.

ATM I am at another crossroads with my current system. Heard a loud 'pop' a few days back on start-up, and no sound since. I think one or two capacitors quit on me in the logitech sound system. Currently looking for a place to fix. Three years back my AMD 7970 video card died, was then replaced with the current GeForce 1660Ti. Mouse and keyboard have been replaced just last week due to frequent wireless connection failures. I guess the need to upgrade to a new system has now shifted from a want, to more of a need, lol ! The system was built in 2011, so I guess more frequent failures are to be expected at this age.

Got word back from repair shop today and my 5.1 sound system is done. A catastrophic failure took out the main board and some resistors as well. I now have a brand new replacement sound system ordered which should arrive in about a week.

. . . very impressive airport scenery, on a par with or even better than Orbx. I have both KSFO and KIAD and the detail and lighting is great but not tough on frames.

Wish they would do KJFK and Heathrow . .

Thanks for answer. I have that too. What gate number is that so that I can find it for my cargo planes, please?

Mr. Zippy, Good guess And great to hear from you. Hope all is well with you

I can't tell as there is a big exclude file over the airport in ADE however it is the main cargo area (incl Fedex) and the most north parking spot and area at SFO.

The history of the USAF at Soesterberg AB in FSX

In 1954, the Netherlands government agreed, at the instigation of NATO, to accept the offer of the American government to deploy a squadron of American military planes. The task of the squadron would be to provide a contribution to Dutch air defense, within the context of NATO. The 512th Fighter Day Squadron, stationed at RAF Manston in Great Britain, was detailed by the Headquarters of the USAFE for transference to the Netherlands. Its new home base would be Soesterberg Air Base.

In September 1955, the 512th moved to RAF Bentwaters, England without personnel or equipment. Its 28 North American F-86F Sabres,[3] personnel and equipment however stayed in the Netherlands and were assigned to the newly activated 32nd Fighter-Day Squadron (32nd FDS). The squadron designation was chosen by the USAF in light of the World War II ties by the squadron to the defense of Dutch possessions in the Caribbean, giving the unit a historical link to the Netherlands.

From August 1956 onward the F-100 C replaced the the F-86 F. This altered the shape of the airfield as the F-100 needed a longer runway than its predecessor.

In the late fifties the Commanding Officer of 32nd squadron, Colonel Blesse felt that the 32nd squadron insignia had to be adapted to the Dutch standard; after all, the unit was operationally under the control of the Netherlands. The circular squadron insignia of the Wolfhound was combined the circular wreath with the crown on top. Like all Dutch squadrons had. The Dutch approved the idea, permission of the USAF was never asked. As the Dutch Queen lived only a few miles from Soesterberg, 32nd squadron was referred to as "the Queen's own". Around the same period the Dutch national flag appeared full size at the tail of the F-100 C.

In 1960 the F-100 C was replaced by the Convair F-102 A Delta Dagger. The Dutch national flag remained the tail and the Ditch styled squadron logo also appeared at the tail.

Razbam F-102 A Delta Dagger (default Razbam textures).

Somebody must have disliked the idea of USAF aircraft flying with the national colours of another country as from 1964 the Dutch flag disappeared from the tail. However the Dutch styled squadron insignia remained.
Not long after the green squadron colour appeared at the tail again.

In August 1969 the iconic McDonnell F-4 E Phantom II arrived to replace the Delta Daggers. The Phantom were painted in standard SEA camouflage scheme and received the letter CR at the tail. The "C" stood for Camp New Amsterdam (as the American enclave at Soesterberg AB was called) the "R" was the first free letter in sequence. The Phantoms were still operational when I arrived at Soesterberg in 1978. A commonly used expression was "Jet noise the sound of freedom". Although not everybody like the loud noise the Phantoms made.

Autumn 1978 the first F-15 A with registration 77-0074 arrived at Soesterberg.

The F-15 A didn't stay long at Soesterberg as in 1980 it was already replaced by the F-15C. 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron flew the Eagle until 1992, after which they were replaced by the A version again. They stayed at Soesterberg until the squadron left the Netherlands in January 1994.

    What if....

In 1989 the cold war was as good over. Many USAF units left Europe or were inactivated. Defence budgets were dropping and although Soesterberg AB dated back to 1913 and was the first airfield of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, it was closed in 2008. The National Military Museum is located at the former Air Base, but many building have disappeared and the secret buildings from the cold war are suddenly public.

So the CR at the tail is unlikely, but with the events of the past year we might see USAF fighter operating from Dutch air bases again.

So just for fun a "what if".

Dino Cattaneo's free F-35 with quick and dirty repaint by me.

I hope you enjoyed this history lesson.

Thanks for the history lesson Huub. Some of it I knew (wink, wink, nod, nod ) but now I know the rest of the (illustrated) story.
