50 years ago or so, USS Forrestal had a C-130 on board for trials...pucker factor quite large for these I imagine

I know that the Navy shipped some R4Ds (Navy for C-47) down there after WWII to use and equipped them with skis. Just never heard how they were shipped.

That looks like it's got JATO bottles.

It seems to me that getting a C-47 off of a carrier would be easier than getting a C-130 off.

The movie had the whole takeoff sequence I just took this pic of it airborne, yep rocket assisted takeoff, later in the movie they showed the plane in antarctica landing and delivering supplies to the research and construction people there. I love old 50s scifi and lots of em use old military film and sometimes the stuff they have is pretty unique and cool.

I think I've seen the movie, but I can't remember the title.

Jump over to planeaday.com and check out the video in the uper right corner. It's from 95 showing numerous WWII aircraft taking off from CVN 70 and landing at Ford Island. Runs about 8 minutes and ends with Fat Albert JATO near dusk from Ford.
