    New Chinook Model Renders/Textures 26Sep2010

    Good morning all. We had finished touching up the Chinook textures, and adding bump mapping. Also did some tweaks to the model that were reported to us after posting the last set of screenshots. The VC is still in work, but should be finished soon. Then those shots will be put up, and off to the coder/developer she will go. As always comments are welcome, but remember it is a work in progress.

    Great looking chopper there. Will it be free or payware?

    I'm pretty sure the center hook is not fitted to the exterior like the fore and aft hooks (which are removeable). Center hooks are fitted to a transverse beam within the double floor, the beam is rotational so when stowed the beam swings and the hook faces aft, the lower opening is covered by a door much like a C-130 nose gear door. Internally a floor panel can be removed so the load master can view down on the center hook and beam assembly to assist in loading and unloading from the center hook.

    Google or a copy of the manual will show all these details.

    Will it have a glass cockpit version, and loadmasters animated/situated in the cargo area?
    Also, will it have a war configuration with door and ramp-guns/gunners?

    The great thing about the Chinook is it's a monster of a helo and it's fast. That looks great. Is it being designed for someone else, or will this be one of your own releases?

    Definitely coming along and looking rather well. You did mention feedback welcome so, the textures (lighter white shades) look as if it was removed with a pencils erasure. Really stands out to my eye and draws my vision mainly in those areas. A bit more blending.
    .....Other than that it looks like it's coming along real nice.

    Thanks for the photos of the cargo hook. Will have to pass that along.. So it his on a beam just like ours is on the H-60.. Only theirs looks a lot beefier. It will be payware.. It is being coded/released by Nemeth Designs as the rest of/and future choppers will be. We have an excellent working relationship with them, and plan to continue it. Not sure of the price, but I would expect it to continue in the range that we have been releasing products at. Thanks for all the comments, and look forward to showing pictures of the VC when it is finished.

    Not sure on the H-60, I'm not overly upto date on those at the moment, just knew about the Chinook center hook from another project I 'was' working on.

    One other thing, your rotor blades are the wrong way round, well one set is, the Chinook has contra rotating hubs, yours are both going the same way, i.e. anti clockwise when viewed from above. The following picture http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...nethaf.arp.jpg shows that your aft blades are back to front, they should rotate clockwise when viewed from above, i.e. you need to flip the blades so that the leading edge is the other way round, you will also need to flip those parts of the hub that trail the blade, ie all the collective linkages etc, note also the yaw stability strakes along the lower edge of the fuselage sponsons toward the rear wheels, fitted to most if not all Chinooks to increase yaw stability, there are two more yaw stability strakes fitted to the underside of the rear ramp.

    By the way, we do the blades that way so that we only have to UV and paint ONE set...

    the centre hook is fitted on a centre beam. I know, i worked on the might wokka for the RAF from 1999-2004.

    The Beam holds the hook, and rotates up into the centre bay for storage when not needed. There is a door which opens both in the lower skin, and internally when needed

    I work on H-60's currently (2 as a matter of fact, SH-60B & MH-60R).. We have a baby version of what he sent in the link.. In the B it has a max capacity of 6,000LB, and in the R they "revised" it so it can carry 9,000LB.. even though neither helo has the capacity to carry that much (which boggles my mind as to why they even uprated it for the R)..

    Thanks for also pointing out about the blades.. while I knew it had contra-rotating rotors I did not notice the blades.. We had a similar thing with the Skycrane where the actually animation rotation was backwards from the way it really was.. That was quite embarassing. Did not even pay attention to the name of the reply Mr. Davies.. Need to put some more shots of that F-14A up. I am really looking forward to that one.

    On a side note.. here is a photo of our puny cargo hook on a SH-60B (R is identical, but like I said for some reason they uprated it for another 3000 pounds). Of course took it on one of ours since good H-60 photos are so hard to find on the net.

    I know you do, as does everyone else in the industry LOL, or they should !, saving UVW space and texture space is one of the biggest gains in model making for FPS friendly ness.

    They were just casual observations, but if I see anything really drastic I'll let you know, I dont really have time to get into fine detailed critique due to other workloads, but so far it looks a very good rendition of the Chinook.

    Outstanding looking textures, inside and out! Not much a fan of the regular Chinook, but would love to fly around in an MH47E. Any chance of releasing one with an approximated cockpit of what you think is in it, versus violating any federal violations of OPSEC though there may be some if googled. Not to start any sort of flamewar on the Chinook vs Blackhawk, just doesn't have the same manueverability the Blackhawk does, though admittedly the fastest bird in our inventory, just flies much like a bus, albeit a fast one outpacing the supporting attack escorts. The only time I really liked em was in the winter and ingressing thru the ramp and feeling the exhaust on a cold face.

    PS, would buy it for nostalgic reasons now, just thinking of how many times I really liked seeing it coming to get us off those cold a** mountain tops.

    Hey Styker.. I can tell you from my work that the MH series aircraft (anything except for maybe the 53) is proprietary technology, and is actually classified information. At work we are on a need to know basis, and a lot of the aircrafts systems cannot even be accessed without special cards which get inserted into the center console... So while we could speculate what the screens look like I do not think it is worth the risk/attention that it brings. This is why we choose to model older steam gauge aircraft along with the fact that steam gauges are better on FPS than glass.

    Steve, that's cool. The passengers in back don't get to see much either, just know they are a totally self supporting sweetheart of a bird. They make blah look good! I actually look forward to the more vanilla version too, after seeing and flying your Skycrane and what you've done with the B52 pit, you've always got my wallet at your beckon and release.
