I think a C-46 would be the way to go.
I don't understand all the work & effort that's going to be put into the C-97.

That's the developer's choice, he can make what he likes. There's a great deal of enthusiasm for an aircraft type needed when building a model, perhaps you ought to try Gmax and have a crack at a C46? That's what I did when no-one was building the aircraft I wanted.
