Exclamation USAF - Aircraft "Bone Yard"

I was reading a thread in NewsHawks about the pending retirement of the T37 trainer.

    "After 50 years" - http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...ad.php?t=20383

The article mentioned: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., the home of the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or AMARG.

This is the place (out in the desert) where retired U.S. military aircraft are stored pending disposal or removal of parts.

So just for fun I had a look at it using Google Maps ...... GEEZUZ THIS PLACE IS HUGE!!!

There are planes of all types parked everywhere. Just when I thought I'd seen them all; another area came into view. Detail / resolution is pretty good. I imagine Google Earth would give a better view.

Just click "Maps" on the Google start page (at the upper left) http://www.google.ca/

Then paste this line in the "search box": Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz, hit search & zoom in till ya see the planes.

Sorry but I can't seem to upload any pics. This place is definitely worth a look!

On various assignments to Arizona, I've visited Davis Monthon AFB to see the hulks out in the desert a couple of times.

Also of interest is the Pima County air museum just a few miles to the South-East of DM AFB where they restore many of the hulks and display them. I can spend all day touring the museum and have done so on several occasions.

If you're into aviation, then a trip to Tucson to see both places is well in order and worth the time.

Here's a link to the Pima County Air Museum:

I believe that to outfit an F-4 Phantom with rc gear, shakedown flight 'em and then paint 'em orange and then only to be used as a target drone for training is simply a crying shame. But I understand it.
