Dear Moses she's the Campbell twinboom indeed
Now time to unleash your obscure floater (when my turn comes up I do have a really difficult one that I Always forget to submit!)
    Cheers
    BG

  2. #12027
    Thanks BG.

    As promised, a flying boat...

  3. #12028
Well you did warn it was going to be obscure......Triton Water Sprite ??

  4. #12029
You can't keep a Scotsman down. Spot on Mike. (Better make it a double).

Thought the Water Sprite would at least last until tomorrow!

Thanks Kevin - the Triton was from Sausalito, where I also consumed a few beers one memorable afternoon ! (there were at least two Scottish pubs there !)

Anyway, here's a nice easy one, but which hasn't made an appearance here before......

    Kaiser Fleetwings XBTK-1?
    Cheers
    BG

...and my compliments over the Triton (really very obscure Aerofiles doesn't even have a pic!)....

  7. #12032
Yessir, piloted by Kaiser Fleetwings himself.

Judging by the state of the paintwork, that thing was fuelled with old sump oil...........

(re the Triton, an Aerofiles search - which works mostly if you use the right parameters - revealed a couple of possibilities, and the 7-pot Comet motor was the clincher !)

Over to the home of the Azzuri.......

    Thanks Lefty
I told you I would submit an obscure floater: here she's (please forgive me for the horrible pic but that's the only one I have):

    Cheers

Well Moses what can I say. I'm astounded! I thought it was obscure enough and in no time at all my mysterious item is solved (with the addition of a phantastic pic posted by Chtornburg to whom my thanks are extended).
BTW should anyone of you gentlemen be in possession of additional pics of subject floater do mail them over even by PM if so you wish.

Your turn then Moses and as usual
    Cheers

Thanks BG. Took me a little while to remember the designer but recalled it was from Spain in the late 1920's.

Chris- That is a very rare photo. Thanks for posting it.

Here is another obscurish one. Apparently they settled on 2x4's for the struts!

  13. #12038
Very like one of those Taubman-Babcock machines.......

  14. #12039
This one appeared in Texas right before WWII. The designer went back to growing corn I guess.

  15. #12040
It had a Warner Scarab radial. The only other thing I know is that the designer became a lawyer after the war and practiced up until the 1960's.

Put us out of our misery.......

    Here you go:

    Votaw

    E B Votaw, Beaumont TX. W-2V 1938 = 2pOM; 125hp Warner Scarab. [17624].

    Open board please.

  18. #12043
Ahh, that explains the fruitless searching ! '2pOM' indeed - if that's Open, I'm Santa Claus........

  19. #12044
One day you will have to explain the legend for those string of letters and numbers listed with each aircraft. Believe it or not, I have never used those to find anything!

  20. #12045
That's just Aerofiles shorthand only place I've seen it.

    Chris

  21. #12046
First is number of crew/passengers. '2p' is a two-seater, and so on

Next is 'O' or 'C' meaning open cockpit or closed. 'O/C' usually means the pilot braving the elements while his passengers are snugger.

Then the wing position 'hw 'mw' 'lw' - self explanatory

Then 'M' for monoplane, or 'B' for biplane.

Finally, a flying boat will be 'Fb', a floatplane 'F', an amphibian 'Am'.

    So, the Consolidated P3Y is a 3pChwMFb. OK ??

Trouble is (a) it is often inaccurate, as we have seen , and (b) sometimes it ain't there at all !

  22. #12047
So, after all that, here is a 2pChwM.

Which looks as though someone has punched it on the nose......

    Thank ye.

Anyone else having some luck with Lefty's cabin cruiser?

  25. #12050
A radial from a company successful in 40's and 50's with 'cabin cruisers' more in the Cessna/Piper mould.

6 of this model built prewar. Come on now, chaps !
