    MSFS (Re-install?)

    Hi guys,

I finally moved my drives from my old PC to my new PC but I can't access the MSFS .exe file due to all of the security, so I can't make a shortcut to run it. So, I'm guessing I'll just have to re-install it over this one? I'm not sure I can remove it since it's in a new pc now. I run my games on their own drives. I know I'll need to rename the community folder before I do anything. Also, if I re-install, is the installer the latest version, or will I have to spend days updating?

    Thanks,
    Ken

If you'll install, you'll get the latest version of the sim. You'll have to download the world updates seperately in the content manager though.

    Good luck!

Isn't it just a matter of using a technique with a name like "taking ownership of files/folders" or something like that ?
If I remember correctly, you do that from the properties window of the main folder, and it should go relatively fast.
Once done, you would simply have to "reinstall" MSFS, choosing that exact folder as destination. The install program should be able to see the files in there and understand that it may not need to re-download everything.
But it's just a direction to investigate for you. I hope more knowledgeable members will give more accurate details.

Copy/move your OneStore/Community folders to a new folder and point MSFS to that during the reinstall. Then you only have to reinstall the base game and it will use the data files from your old install.

Indeed, rightclick on the file, select properties, go to the security tab, click on the advanced button and in the next window take ownership. Close the windows that have been opened, rightclick on the file, select properties, go to the security tab, click on the advanced button and in the next window add yourself as a user with full access rights.

However, I'm not a fan of this. It is in my humble opinion always better to start from scratch when installing the sim on a new machine. It avoids problems.

Going back to the earliest versions of Windows + MSFS, I've always found that to be the best and safest method to avoid unknowns. Granted this latest MSFS takes a very long time to DL, which I just went through, but there is a piece of mind not having to worry about loose ends and mismatched pieces.

I did try that advanced method in the security folders and it said one of the security files was corrupt, but I couldn't delete it since I didn't have permission, because that file was corrupt, lol. The Ol' Catch 22. I'll try that re-install method pointing at the community files so I don't have to re-install all of the world add-ons.

    Thanks everyone!
