I have watched a lot of his flights in the past and actually produced a few sceneries for some of his destinations. Mariama is not in FSX though, what are you using for that airstrip? I am currently doing a small scenery for that location though.

    Used To Do A Lot

I used to do a lot of bush flying in the Quest Kodiak by Lionheart Creations. Beautiful airplane and my first experience with the GPS 1000 glass panels.

Same here Richard. I don't have the Kodiak installed currently so I have a nice BN-2 Islander that I've tested on this short airstrip and it gets in and out nicely.

    So I found out!

As an alternative I flew from Wewak to roughly the correct position of Mariama. Then tried to come down through he clouds to find a spot to land. I find FSX coverage of that area is very generic, so kinda dilutes the experience.

I'll have the scenery done in a few days. I can send it to you via a download link by PM here.

Pips, here are some screenshots of a quickie scenery for Mariama, correctly positioned in the Sim.

    Oh that looks challenging!
Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

Actually not as tough as it might appear. Once you decend over the lake it's a straight shot with fairly low vegetation. The rwy is about 2500'. I've been flying a BN-2 Islander in and out to test and I have plenty of distance.

Only thing I don't really care for is the rwy texture. ADE seems to think that the color you see in the pics is right for "grass", lol

It is possible to add custom textures in ADEx. A little involved but I have added broken concrete; natural grass; green concrete; etc. for airports that had these textures. You can also add transparent and use the photoreal by labeling it "unknown" this is what I used in the past. John said he was going to add a "transparent" texture for runways, taxiways etc. but couldn't make it work to his satisfaction and now I guess with his retirement we've got what we've got which is great IMO.

Yea that's what I decided on. It isn't a photoreal ground texture, just a regular airport background with vegetation and some grass thrown in to mask some of the hard edges you get with those types of background. All in all for a quick 2 day turn around it came out pretty well. Nice thing about most of the PNG remote airstrips is once you place the runway there's little else you need to do as they are nothing more than a strip that a plane can land on and the villagers come out with vehicles to pick up supplies and then leave, (not all but some) lol.

    Hi Ed,

Any chance to get it in the Warbird Library ?

Would love to add it to my collection of your airfields (more than 40 so far, all working nicely in P3DV5...)

    Thanks,

    Gérard

Love Missionary Bush Pilot and all things PNG. I note that this is a FSX thread, but for MSFS users who may want to replicate the flight, there is lovely freeware for both locations, Mariana and Wewak. Cheers.
Great places to fly in MSFS - history, maps, old pics etc:
