    Cool Kursk VVS Campaign Released!

I have been working on a Kursk campaign from the Soviet side. It will be in 4 parts: North Early and Late, South Early and Late. I am using Wikipedia sources and "Air War Over Kursk" by D.B. Khazanov as references. I am trying to keep it as close to historically accurate as possible, with respect to aircraft numbers & types, location etc.

This will take a while to finish, though. I have just completed the 20th and last mission of Part 1 = Kursk norther front July 5-7th. I haven't fully flight tested 17 of them yet. I am considering releasing it as a separate Part-1 of 4 or save it to be released later in one, large campaign package. Opinions? I will at my current pace probably take until late spring to finish the lot.

Shadow Wolf, for my penny's worth, I feel the effort you are putting in will result in a great feat, whichever way you package it. Nice one mate!

Large indeed. Logistically, I would suggest keeping it all together. No doubt it will require building a theater, gathering planes, etc. and doing that takes time and effort. Doing that 4 times or keeping a build waiting for a next installment might be more than a player would want to do.
    Cheers,

    Captain Kurt

    Greg,

I would echo Captain Kurt's comments. I think it would be worth the wait. I might even be willing to help you put together an auto-installer for it.

An auto-installer? Now, that would be cool. I see your point guys. I'm gonna test fly what I have and get started on the northern phase 2. I am using a lot of the new UT and others' objects. If I had a wish list, it would include more bases and newer aircraft.

    Hey Shadow Wolf,
This is a very interesting project, I‘m looking forward to flying these missions.
I agree with the other guys, it will be well worth the wait until all parts are completed.

Okay, you guys have convinced me, though I was leaning in that direction. Once I have finished flight testing the 20 I've already done, I will move on to the next phase.

    Progress Report:

I took a few days off to celebrate my B-Day and to learn how to fly and handle the ALPHA Douglas Boston MkIII before I go on and finish test flying. Of the 20 missions completed so far, I've only thoroughly tested 3 so far. The Boston missions are next up.

Anyway, I did go ahead and completed the first mission of the Northern Front phase 2 - another strike, using the Boston. I hope to finish my latest chores and get back to mission building in earnest by the end of the weekend (unless I have to make major changes in the missions tested). If I can take any worth posting, I'll put up some screenshots.

    Cheers:

I promised some screenshots, and so...

This was during a low level attack on a panzer cbn. I had to increase the number of ground targets destroyed as a goal, significantly. You really take out a lot of stuff with dropping sticks of 250lb bombs on arty and AT positions. Fortunately our escorts did their job and kept the FW-190s at bay.

I just tested a mission and filmed it on FRAPS (don't look, it's too large to upload here) with 46 acft, 304 stationary objects and 60kb in size. I flew it on a Win7, i7 laptop and had no lag at all. The mission checked out well. From the video, my flying skills leave much to be desired.

BUT... it uses stuart277's "Hummel" SP Arty piece which I had to remember is set up as a Ship. I remembered in time to set my tactical display to "S" to find and assign targets to wingmen. I made a note of this in the mission briefing.

By the way, long ago I read that on a strike or any other mission , if you do not designate (bracket) a target and give your wingmen the Attack order, they will go after the designated in Mission Builder target. I've done that, they reply with a Roger and I waited... and waited, but the slimes just follow me around and never attack!

Moving on with flight testing, but I built 2 more missions in the meantime.

I doubt many (if any) of the Russians actively involved in current events were even born to see the Great Patriotic War...

    Killer Svend:

Might I suggest that you stand by and consider that many players fly as Axis pilots? Mine is not a Russian campaign, it is a Soviet campaign against one of the most evil empires in history. Stalin, as you probably know, wasn't Russian. So... I will continue my flight testing and mission building, despite my strong feelings about current events just the same, thanks!

I agree SW. The missions you are (re)creating were missions flown by people who were, at that time, our allies. Besides, when it comes to flying WWII missions we are honoring the brave pilots and the extraordinary machines the flew, not the ideologies of whichever side they flew for. I don't think there are many of us, if any at all, who haven't flown missions for the Luftwaffe or the Japanese Navy. It doesn't make us Nazis or axis sympathizers. The Soviets were our allies against Hitler. They had some of the bravest pilots seen in WWII but the Cold War relegated their exploits to shunned and willingly forgotten history. Honoring their memory does not mean you are honoring the ideologies or actions of those in power in Russia now.

Okay,Okay, the red star from the soviet time is still on the planes today, killing innocent ucrainian children, Stalin or Putin who is worst ?, I know that Stalin was Georgian, but so what,a bastard anyway, I have never flown a Luftwaffe campaing (personal reasons) and I will never fly a japanese campaign either. This is my point of view, take it or leave it. Do'nt take this as a campaign against those who make russian campaigns, if you do,you have misundestood me completely. Killer Svend

It's a personal choice guys, and no reason to debate the merits one way or another. Peace, please.

Rightly said: I am next test flying the Pe-2 and Yak-7/9 missions, then I'm off to building the Sov counter offensive in the north. (12 JUL-AUG 10, 43). Screenshots to follow.

In attacks on a Nazi column I knocked out 3 Panthers, a Wespe SP Art veh, and an AA gun. My wingmen did better!

    PS:

I am taking a break for a couple of days while I swap out computers and transfer my working files.

    Progress report

Almost finished with the testing and fixing of the first missions. I found a few problems. Many of the AI aircraft crash on take off. No problem.. I just air-start them. My flight of Yak-7s tend to crash on take off too. My solution? As soon as my engine starts, I hit the throttle and get into the air as quickly as possible then hit X to warp to the next WP before the little buggers have the chance to crash. Could it be something bad in the airfile for the Yak-7s?

I should finish up the test and fix efforts today, then back to mission building. Spring cleaning and my son's surgery recovery have all slowed me down.
