There's one little quirk to this thing. On my rig I start cold & dark. parking brake applied. I activate battery, open cowl flaps, open oil cooler flaps, make sure master ignition is off, all mag switches to "off," crack throttles, then open fuel valve no. 1, set mixtures to 100%, turn on fuel pump no. 1, move master ignition to "on," turn mag switch for no. 1 - and aircraft goes absolutely berserk on the tarmac, performing flips, spirals on the ground while engine no. 1 cranks w/o firing. This thing apparently does not like anyone trying a cold & dark start on it - or at least on my installation.

Not sure if it relates to the problem, but isn't the start up sequence 3-4-2-1?

    Cheers,

That is the sequence most 4 engine aircraft. Appears main generator and hydraulics are powered by #3 engine. Friend who was a former DC-3 pilot told me they always start the engines on the starboard side first.

On passenger aircraft (at least).. the RH engines are started first because pax always embark on the left and you don't want late arrivals embarking in the vicinity of things turning and burning!! As a consequence.. some services tend to be fitted to the RH engines. The Vickers Vanguard (which I'm au fait with) has a generator on each engine and in the early days.. start sequence was 4, 3, 1, 2 (note that the Vanguard had airstairs in those days too). Engines 3 and 2 had aircon units fitted so that some conditioning could be provided prior to the doors closing. The start sequence changed later to 3,4,1,2 and stayed that way until it's end as a Merchantman. By this time, the aircon unit on #2 had been removed as the requirement for more conditioning had gone with only freight and horses being carried. It was also a weight saving move.

Found a Fifi - startup. #3 is already running, and the crew proceeds with #4 etc.

2200 fonts later and it looks like I'm 'drawing' the crew names on Jack's Hack....
...even though they'd probably be illegible at 2048 ...

    Edit.....looks like it's legible afterall...

    I think it's about done...

Looks like the startup sequence is about the only thing Mark and I missed at Oshkosh 2016. Doing the walk through of Fi Fi was definitely a highlight of our trip.

Soon as I get back from the MRI I'm going to give that 3-4-2-1 sequence a try.

    Waddy's Wagon

I always liked this one, mainly due to the story of Waddy Young.

Re: the wild behavior on the ramp during startup - the 3-4-2-1 sequence takes care of that. Thanks for the tip.

Just Binged his name. Quite a story about self-sacrifice and devotion to his country and his friends - his "team," as it were.

GrandPrix's done and dusted.... looks like it's time to have a stab at 'Waddy's' ...

....and maybe a 'Doc' if that's been lost since...

The B-29 engine start up process from cold dark cockpit must be followed to the letter according to the reference start up procedures found under Aircraft _ Kneeboard _ CHECKLIST.

Also make sure each mag switch is put in the "both" position before you turn on the Master Ignition switch.

Today the cast comes off....then it's rehab time....much like the feeling you'd get if you slammed your finger in a door.....3 times a day...

    ....willingly....
