Sorry to be a problem child! "J" turns off the bounding box for me, and CTRL-E checks and unchecks the Edges Only checkbox in the Display Properties but does not remove the diagonals:

Voodoo indeed. Thank you. I had to uncheck both "Use wireframe faces" and "Display Wireframe Objects Using Triangle Strips". The plane still has triangles but other shapes do not. Good enough!
And thank you for the link the FSDeveloper; it looks like a great resource.
I am up to Tutorial #6 and searching for some 3-views, eager to get to the next step.
