The Messerschmitt 109 was the most important german fighter of WWII totalling over 30,000 built. The D model was a slight improvement over the previous B & C ones. # 79 was operated by staffel 3, J/88 during the spanish civil war in 1938, mounted by Werner Molders, top german ace during the SCW with 14 kills.
